Charlotte Art League Third Tuesday Programs
On the third Tuesday of each month, CAL presents a program speaker who is a learned professional in the art world to provide information or a demonstration on his area of expertise. Speakers have ranged from gallery owners telling artists how to approach a gallery to accomplished painters, sculptors, ceramicists, and photographers explaining their art and their successes and the path they took to both. These lectures and demonstrations are open to the public. They begin at 7:00 PM and may have few a brief CAL business announcements to precede the main feature.

Program speaker: Linda Luise Brown on Modern Art & Modernism.
Modern Art and the Modernist movement in Western art began in Europe and flowed to America following WWII. This talk is in four parts:
1. A brief illustration of the range of different movements within Modernism, beginning with the Impressionists;
2. A discussion of three paintings,* each having a claim to be “the first modern painting”;
3. A focus on the Bauhaus as the central intellectual driver of modernist theory and pedagogy; and
4. An examination of Abstract Expressionism, as a major American contribution to Modernist painting.

Program Speaker: Janet Lasher on West African textiles and printing techniques.
Janet will talk about African Textile printing methods. Western Africa has a rich history and tradition of textile printing and dying. Many of these methods have been modernized and are used in contemporary fiber & textile art. This lecture will discuss traditional and contemporary tools and methods of making marks and pattern on textiles.

A visual timeline of the evolution of Indian art
Indian Art is the art produced on the Indian subcontinent from about the 3rd millennium BC to modern times. The vast scope of the art of India intertwines with the cultural history, religions and philosophies. Indian art can be classified into specific periods each reflecting particular religious, political and cultural developments. Ashima Kodali, Veda Saravanan and Varsha Pradhan will give a talk on these periods with more emphasis on contemporary art, and present as many examples of art to make it interesting.

Program Speaker: Diana Arvanites demonstration on faux encaustic painting with short history of how encaustic painting developed over time. d.arvanites@att.net
Encaustic is a beeswax based paint that is kept molten on a heated palette. It is applied to a surface and reheated to fuse the paint into a uniform enamel-like finish. The word encaustic comes from Greek and means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. Encaustic has a long history, but it is as versatile as any 21st century medium.
